World class facility keeps CSR Bradford insulating the construction industry

CLIENT

Bradford Insulation, a CSR company, is a leading manufacturer of premium energy saving insulation products. Based in Sydney, Australia, we have operations across the Asia Pacific region, including manufacturing facilities in China, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia.

OBJECTIVES

Wiley were contracted by CSR Bradford to design and construct the 10,000m² glasswool production facility in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. 

The facility will annually produce around 8000 tonne of glasswool batts and rolls, used for insulation throughout many facets of the construction industry.

CHALLENGES

• Taking over the design from another builder, reengineering and proceeding to construction
• Project was fast-tracked with very minimal construction documentation
• The main building had to be structurally redesigned
• Working simultaneously with CSR Bradford’s installation team during construction.

SOLUTIONS

Design

• The structure was converted from a single span trussed beam shed to a light rafter alternative with strategically placed columns resulting in savings in excess of $0.5M for the client
• The re-engineered design allowed CSR Bradford to install a second production line in the future to double their output capacity
• The redesign also provided additional space for large storage prior to distribution.

Construction

• Wiley completed the in-ground concrete works, including pits, trenches, footings, slabs and holding down bolts in preparation for CSR Bradford to install their equipment steelwork before the structure could be erected over the top
• Once the steelwork was completed, Wiley erected the structure despite limited access from below resulting in much of the work being done via large cranes with extended reach.

RESULTS

Working simultaneously meant CSR Bradford successfully fast tracked the equipment installation allowing the facility to be operational within weeks as opposed to months.  The result is a world class facility that allows CSR Bradford to meet the demands of the construction industry well into the future. 

With CSR’s Green Policy of utilising rainwater harvesting, recycled water from the local council, and at least 60 per cent recycled materials in their production, Wiley were proud to work in conjunction with CSR Bradford.
